Isolation and Characterization of a Phenanthrene- Degrading Sphingomonas sp. Strain P2 and Its Ability to Degrade Fluoranthene and Pyrene via Cometabolism

چکیده
A bacterial strain P2 capable of using phenanthrene as a sole source of carbon and energy was isolated from a lubricant-contaminated soil sample collected from a garage in Prajinburi province, Thailand and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis to be in the genus of Sphingomonas. The Sphingomonas sp. strain P2 rapidly degraded phenanthrene from 100 mgl to undetectable level by HPLC analysis within 72 h. Besides phenanthrene, this strain was able to degrade a wide variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, dibenzofuran, fluorene, and anthracene, meanwhile, it was also capable of co-metabolizing high molecular weight PAHs such as fluoranthene and pyrene in liquid minimum medium supplemented with phenanthrene.

The expansion of a microbial bank for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial for removal of these persistent pollutants. In this study, five gram-negative, aerobic, non-fermentative bacterial strains (III-R3, IV-P11, IV-P13, IV-R13, and V-P18) were isolated from the activated sludge of a petrochemical wastewater treatment plant using enrichment pro tocol based on...

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, toxic compounds widely distributed in the environment by bacteria, is a cheap and safe cleaning up method. The present study attempts to isolate and characterize dioxygenase-producing bacteria which are able to degrade phenanthrene and pyrene from refinery soils. It also aims to assess in vitro biodegradation. To do so, two contaminated soil s...

متن کاملDegradation of phenanthrene, fluorene, fluoranthene, and pyrene by a Mycobacterium sp.
Mycobacterium sp. strain BB1 was isolated from a former coal gasification site. It was able to utilize phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene as sole sources of carbon and energy and to degrade fluorene cometabolically. Exponential growth with solid phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene was obtained in fermentor cultures. The growth rates were 0.069, 0.056, and 0.040 h-1, respectively. Several...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degrading Sphingomonas sp. strain KS14 was isolated from soil. Strain KS14 was able to utilize phenanthrene and naphthalene as sole source of carbon and energy, and mineralize phenanthrene to carbon dioxide. Strain KS14 cometabolically degraded pyrene using phenanthrene as secondary growth substrate. A large degradative plasmid (>500 kb) was detected from t...
